About Us
Classical Ballet has been an integral part of York County Since 1978. When the COVID-19 pandemic struck in March of 2020, York County Ballet, was suddenly forced to close its doors. Classical ballet education and arts performance have been a part of the fabric of York County for more than four decades. Thousands of dancers have trained and performed for countless audience members in our very own community.
Ballet of York County, a 501.c3 nonprofit, tax-exempt organization, consisting of a ballet school as well as a performing company, was formed to continue a tradition of artistic excellence and community arts education that is a fundamental piece of our history in York County. We are led by an Artistic Director with the support of a Board of Directors and Instructors that understand just how important arts education is to our community. Our mission is simple- to promote, advance, and encourage the art of classical ballet and dance through education, appreciation and performance in the area of York County, SC.
We are so thankful to be able to educate current and future generations of dancers in the timeless art form of classical ballet, having started instruction in August 2020. Our goal is to continue to promote and encourage the performance of ballet and to share the arts throughout the community. The Nutcracker, performed annually at Johnson Hall Theatre on the Campus of Winthrop University, has been a staple in York County and is the only performance of its kind in the area. We are grateful to continue this legacy as well as annual spring performances which have always included a free performance for local Title I school students, many of whom may not otherwise have the opportunity to see a ballet or live theatrical performance. We firmly believe that community caring is an important element of arts education. For Ballet of York County, that will always include community outreach such as quarterly food drives for local food pantries and free public school performances whenever possible.
